About Steam verification
Steam accounts are created with an email address, but Valve uses a phone number on the account for recovery and extra security, and Steam may ask you to confirm one before certain changes. A virtual number for Steam helps when you want to add a phone without sharing your personal mobile number, when you keep a separate account for testing a game you are developing, or when you are abroad and cannot receive texts on your own SIM.
Pick a country, add the number in your Steam account settings, and the Steam verification code shows in your dashboard when the text arrives. You pay only when it is delivered. If you also set up the Steam Mobile Authenticator, write down its recovery code, because this number is for one verification and will not receive later texts. Use it for your own accounts and follow the Steam Subscriber Agreement.
Steam at a glance
- Sign-up
- Email address first, with a phone number added later from your account settings
- Phone use
- Account recovery and confirming security changes
- Steam Guard
- Sign-in codes come by email or from the Steam Mobile app, not by SMS
- Recovery code
- Adding the Mobile Authenticator gives you a recovery code, starting with R, to remove it later
Tips for a smooth Steam verification
- Steam may ask you to confirm the change by email before it texts the code, so have your inbox open and move quickly: the number stays active for up to about 20 minutes.
- Write down the Mobile Authenticator recovery code and keep it offline. Without a long-term phone on the account, it is your way back in if you lose your phone.
- Wait for the resend option instead of requesting codes back to back.
- If Steam says the number cannot be used, get another number or try another country. You are not charged for a number that never received a code.
Private temporary number vs free public inbox
Free public inboxes are fine for a quick test, but every code sent to them is public. A private number keeps the sign-up code to you; for an account you will log in to again, add your own number or email and turn on two-step verification right after, or rent a number.
Private number
- One buyer per number for that activation
- The code shows only in your dashboard
- Pay only if the code arrives
- For one verification, up to about 20 minutes
Free public inbox
- Shared: anyone can read the messages
- Codes sent to it are public
- Numbers are often already used or blocked
- Free, with no account needed
Steam number FAQ
What does a verification number for Steam cost?
Steam numbers cost from $0.20 to $2.28 today, with a median of $0.28 across 200 countries. The cheapest right now are United States ($0.20), United Kingdom ($0.20) and Canada ($0.20). Prices update several times a day, and you only pay if the code arrives.
Which country is best for Steam verification?
The cheapest well-stocked countries for Steam right now are United States, United Kingdom and Canada; if one number is turned away, try another country.
What if my Steam OTP never arrives?
Not every number gets a code. If yours does not, you are not charged: the price is only held while you wait, and it goes back to your wallet automatically when the timer ends. You can also tap Cancel & refund after a few minutes and try another number.
How long do I have to receive the Steam code?
Up to about 20 minutes per number; the timer on your number shows exactly how long. When a code comes, it usually arrives within a minute or two, but not every number gets one, because some apps turn certain numbers away. If nothing comes, the hold is refunded and you can try another number or country.
Is this a temporary number for Steam?
Yes, and a private one: the number is yours alone for one Steam verification, for up to about 20 minutes, and the code shows only in your dashboard. Free public inboxes are different: anyone can read the messages there.
Can I receive a second code or log in again later?
The number is meant for one verification within its window, so finish signing up in one go. If you need to log in again later or receive codes over weeks, rent a number instead.
Why does Steam say the number is not valid or blocked?
Apps sometimes turn away certain number ranges, even real SIM numbers. If that happens, tap Cancel & refund and get another number or pick a different country. You are not charged for a number that never received a code.
Are these real SIM numbers?
Most of our numbers are real SIM numbers, and a few are virtual. If an app refuses a number, cancel it for a refund and try another country.
How do I pay?
Create a free account, then top up your wallet from $10 by card, crypto or the other methods shown at checkout. Numbers are paid from that balance, and unused balance stays for later numbers: it never expires, but it cannot be withdrawn. The price is held when you take a number and only charged once the Steam code arrives.
Is it allowed to use a virtual number for Steam?
Use our numbers only for your own accounts, and follow Steam's terms and the law where you live. Temp Number is not affiliated with Steam.
Does Steam need a phone number to sign up?
No. You create a Steam account with an email address. A phone number is added afterwards for recovery and security.
Will Steam text me a code every time I log in?
Usually not. Steam Guard sends sign-in codes by email or shows them in the Steam Mobile app. The phone number is mainly used to confirm changes and recover the account.
