Knowing where the code goes saves a lot of confusion. Telegram does not always send an SMS:
Inside the Telegram app first. If the number is already logged in somewhere, Telegram sends the code as a message to that existing session instead of by SMS. On a fresh number this does not apply, but on a recycled number it can - which is a clue that someone else has used it.

Here is the uncomfortable truth about free numbers, including ours: the inbox is public. That is what makes them free and instant - and it has two consequences you need to plan for.
1. Anyone can see your code while it is valid
Messages on free numbers are visible to every visitor until they are automatically deleted after seven days. In practice the window that matters is the minute or two a login code is valid, but you should assume someone could see it. That is fine for a throwaway account and not fine for anything you care about.
2. The number can be used to log in again later
This is the real danger. Telegram lets anyone who can receive a code for your number request a new one and sign in on a new device.
